Oradour sur Glane
Oradour-sur-Glane was attacked for no apparent reason on Saturday 10th of June 1944, by men from the Der Führer Regiment of the 2nd Waffen SS Panzer Division. In the ensuing massacre 643 men, women and children were murdered. The village was looted and every building set on fire. There is no clear explanation as to why the SS acted as they did, or why Oradour-Sur-Glane was selected. However, the ruined village has been preserved and is maintained as a memorial to those who died.
On the site there is a Visitors Centre which chronicles the timeline of events and provides background information on the Nazi occupation of France, as well as giving a glimpse into the lives of the villagers and human faces to the tragedy.
